Athletics & Sport

Sport, recreation, and physical education form an important part of student life at ICOM. Beginning with movement-based games, fundamental motor skill development, and active play in the early years, students progressively engage in athletics, interschool sport, and competitive team programs throughout their school years.

Overview

ICOM’s Health and Physical Education program encourages students to develop lifelong habits that support physical wellbeing and active participation. From Foundation to Year 12, students engage in age-appropriate learning experiences that build confidence, develop physical skills, and promote a positive attitude towards movement and exercise.

In the Primary years, students participate in games and structured activities that develop fundamental movement skills while fostering enjoyment of physical activity. As students progress into Secondary School, they are introduced to a broader range of sports, fitness activities, and health concepts that support informed decision-making and personal wellbeing. Through regular participation, students develop the knowledge and practical skills needed to maintain healthy and active lifestyles both during their school years and beyond.

Junior Primary Physical Education

Junior Primary Physical Education focuses on developing fundamental movement skills through engaging and age-appropriate activities.

Students learn skills such as running, jumping, throwing, catching and balancing while building coordination, spatial awareness and confidence in movement. Team games also introduce students to cooperation, participation and basic sporting rules.

Senior Primary Physical Education

As students progress through Primary School, Physical Education expands to include more structured sports, game-based learning and skill development.

Students refine movement skills, learn the rules and strategies of a variety of sports, and develop teamwork, communication and sportsmanship through regular participation in physical activity. Interschool competition is also introduced at this level.

Sporting Facilities

Sporting facilities extend across the campus and include multiple playing fields, the synthetic turf House Arena, indoor sporting facilities, a weights room, an indoor climbing wall and dedicated table tennis facilities. Together, these facilities support physical education, recreation and training throughout the year.

Secondary Physical Education

Secondary Physical Education combines practical participation with a broader understanding of health, fitness and wellbeing.

Students explore topics relating to physical activity, healthy lifestyles and personal wellbeing while continuing to develop sport-specific skills through a range of individual and team-based activities.

The program encourages students to make informed decisions about their health and physical activity both now and into the future.

Annual Athletics Carnivals

Athletics Carnivals provide students with opportunities to participate in a range of track and field events while contributing to House competition and College spirit. To ensure an age-appropriate experience for all students, separate carnivals are held for Junior Primary, Upper Primary and Secondary students throughout the year.

Interschool Sport

ISS Focus Sports include Basketball, Soccer, AFL Football, Table Tennis, Badminton, Volleyball and Cricket. Through these sports, students participate in regular training, interschool competition, and representative pathways that allow them to test their skills against schools from across Melbourne and Victoria.

Students compete in a range of competitions including the Independent Schools Sports Association (ISSA), School Sport Victoria (SSV), Aspire Cup, and other interschool tournaments throughout the year. Teams regularly progress beyond local competition to division, regional, and metropolitan finals, with many achieving championship success.

The ISS program is designed to develop teamwork, resilience, discipline, and sportsmanship while encouraging students to represent the Islamic College of Melbourne with pride. Students are provided with opportunities to compete across a variety of year levels and ability levels, ensuring broad participation while also supporting high-performing athletes in their sporting development.
