Diploma of Islamic Leadership (ILEAD)

Starting from Year 10, students at Islamic College of Melbourne can undertake the exclusive 22628VIC Diploma of Islamic Leadership (ILEAD), a three-year program delivered alongside their VCE studies.

Delivered through Islamic College of Melbourne, a Registered Training Organisation (RTO 22734) registered with the Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority (VRQA), the qualification is the first of its kind in Australia and is offered exclusively at ICOM.

Developed in collaboration with respected community leaders and organisations, the program was created to meet the evolving needs of the Australian Muslim community while nurturing leadership grounded in Islamic scholarship, character and service.

Through structured classroom learning, practical experiences and international learning opportunities, students graduate with both their VCE and a nationally recognised AQF Level 5 qualification, equipping them with the knowledge and practical skills to lead, educate, support and serve their communities.

Why ILEAD?

The Australian Muslim community continues to grow and evolve, creating increasing demand for individuals who can provide faith-based guidance, leadership and support.

Developed in collaboration with community leaders and organisations, the 22628VIC Diploma of Islamic Leadership (ILEAD) was created to help meet this need by preparing students to contribute meaningfully within mosques, schools, community organisations, chaplaincy services and broader Australian society.

Students develop a strong foundation in Quranic sciences, Arabic language, pastoral care, community leadership and public speaking while learning how Islamic principles can be applied within the Australian context.

Through a combination of Islamic scholarship, leadership development and practical experience, ILEAD empowers students to become knowledgeable, confident and community-minded leaders who can make a positive contribution wherever they serve.

Course Structure & Areas of Study

The 22628VIC Diploma of Islamic Leadership (ILEAD) comprises eight core Units of Competency with no elective subjects, carefully structured to equip students with the knowledge, skills and leadership capabilities required to serve the Australian Muslim community. Dedicated ILEAD Learning Environment

Students undertake the program within a purpose-built learning environment designed specifically for advanced Islamic studies and leadership development. The dedicated ILEAD facility includes specialised Islamic Studies classrooms, dedicated wudu facilities, a Qur’anic reference library, a minbar and sermon delivery space, and collaborative learning areas designed to support leadership development and Islamic scholarship.

Practical Placement

Students complete 205 hours of practical placement throughout the program within settings such as mosques, Islamic centres, Muslim chaplaincy environments and simulated workplace settings. These experiences allow students to apply their learning in authentic community contexts while developing valuable professional skills.

International Learning Experiences

Students participate in international learning opportunities focused on Islamic leadership and the historical contributions of Islamic civilisation to the world. These experiences broaden students’ perspectives while strengthening their understanding of leadership, identity and service.

Assessment Methods

Practical Observation

Demonstrate skills and applied knowledge through observed activities, discussions, role-play scenarios and simulated leadership situations conducted in classroom and faith-based environments.

Research & Written Projects

Complete written reports, research tasks, case studies and knowledge-based assessments that develop critical thinking and the application of Islamic leadership principles.

Portfolio Evidence

Compile evidence of learning through reflective activities, journals and completed tasks that demonstrate ongoing development and competency across the program.

Practical Placement

Program Delivery & Qualification

The ILEAD Diploma is delivered over three years from Year 10 to Year 12 alongside VCE studies, combining advanced Islamic learning with secondary education. Through classroom learning, practical placement, leadership experiences and community engagement, students develop the knowledge and skills to serve the Australian Muslim community. Graduates are awarded the 22628VIC Diploma of Islamic Leadership (ILEAD), a nationally recognised AQF Level 5 qualification, together with a transcript of completed Units of Competency. Students who do not complete all qualification requirements may be eligible to receive a Statement of Attainment for completed units.

Entry Requirements

Students enrolling in the 22628VIC Diploma of Islamic Leadership (ILEAD) are expected to be at least 15 years of age and demonstrate a foundational understanding of Islamic teachings and principles, appropriate Arabic language proficiency, and the language, literacy and numeracy skills required for diploma-level study. As part of the enrolment process, all applicants participate in a pre-training interview to assess their suitability for the program. Where required, additional learning support may be provided throughout their studies.
