Primary Curriculum
A strong education begins with purposeful teaching. At Islamic College of Melbourne, our Primary curriculum combines strong academic expectations with Islamic values, creating a learning environment where students develop the knowledge, confidence and character to thrive throughout their education. Guided by the Victorian Curriculum F–10 Version 2.0, our teaching is purposeful, consistent and responsive to the needs of every learner.
Primary Curriculum Framework
ICOM’s Primary Curriculum Framework is carefully planned to provide a balanced education across all learning areas. Literacy and numeracy form the foundation for future learning, while science, humanities, specialist subjects and faith-based learning broaden students’ understanding of the world. Quran, Arabic and Islamic Studies are taught each week alongside the Victorian Curriculum, allowing students to strengthen both their academic knowledge and Islamic identity throughout their Primary years.
Learning begins in Foundation, where students are also introduced to Digital Technologies as part of an increasingly connected world. Teachers work collaboratively across year levels through regular planning meetings, ensuring learning remains consistent, purposeful and responsive as students progress from Foundation to Year 6.
Teaching & Assessment
High-quality teaching is supported by ongoing assessment, allowing teachers to understand how every student is progressing and where additional support may be required. Classroom observations, assessment tasks and meaningful feedback help guide teaching while ensuring learning remains responsive to individual needs.
Families receive formal reports and participate in parent-teacher interviews twice each year, providing regular opportunities to discuss progress and future learning goals. Where students require additional support, early intervention strategies are implemented to help them continue developing with confidence.
Learning Beyond the Classroom
Learning extends beyond the classroom through incursions, excursions, cultural celebrations, faith-based programs, competitions and practical learning experiences. These experiences enrich the curriculum while helping students apply their learning in meaningful and engaging ways.
Throughout Primary School, students also enjoy age-appropriate experiences including movie nights, sleepovers, the Year 6 Canberra Camp and annual athletics carnivals. Together, these experiences strengthen friendships, build confidence and create lasting memories as students grow through their Primary years.
