Starting school is one of the most significant milestones in a child's life. At Islamic College of Melbourne, our Primary School supports students from Foundation through to Year 6, with Foundation providing a welcoming introduction where students develop independence, curiosity and a genuine love of learning. Within a purpose-built Foundation environment, students are supported academically, socially and spiritually as they begin their Primary journey. Every experience is carefully designed to help younger students feel safe, valued and ready to learn from their first day.

Purpose-Built Foundation Centre

Our dedicated Foundation Centre has been designed specifically for young learners, with bright classrooms, shared learning spaces, outdoor play areas and secure gardens that encourage exploration, independence and a smooth transition into school life.

Specialist Learning

From Foundation onwards, students participate in specialist learning experiences that broaden the curriculum, develop new skills and encourage exploration across a range of subjects beyond the homeroom classroom.

Designed for Young Learners

Our dedicated Foundation Centre has been thoughtfully designed for students in their first year of school.

Located within its own area of the Primary School, the Foundation Centre provides a calm and welcoming environment where our students can settle into new routines, build friendships and develop a strong sense of belonging. Faith is naturally woven into everyday school life, helping students develop their Islamic identity from their very first days at school.

Six Foundation classrooms surround a shared indoor learning space used for presentations, incursions and collaborative activities throughout the year. Each classroom also opens onto its own outdoor courtyard, creating additional opportunities for play, exploration and outdoor learning.

During recess and lunch, Foundation and Year 1 students enjoy dedicated outdoor areas designed for younger students. These spaces benefit from additional staff supervision, helping students settle confidently into school life.

Learning Through Discovery

A balanced approach combines explicit teaching with meaningful play, hands-on exploration and collaborative learning. Every activity encourages exploration while developing essential early skills.

Faith from the Beginning

Islamic values are woven naturally into everyday school life. Through prayer, manners, Islamic learning and positive relationships, students begin developing a strong sense of identity from their very first year.

Purposeful play is an important part of the Foundation year, giving students opportunities to explore, solve problems, work with others and apply new learning in meaningful ways. Teachers carefully balance explicit instruction with hands-on experiences that support each child's development.

Growing Beyond Foundation

Foundation is the beginning of a carefully planned Primary journey.

As students move into Years 1 and 2, they continue strengthening their literacy, numeracy and independent learning skills while exploring an increasingly broad curriculum. Through Years 3 to 6, students are encouraged to think critically, take greater responsibility for their learning and participate in leadership, specialist subjects and wider College life.
