VCE (Year 11 & 12)

VCE Year 11 & 12 Points of Difference

Years 11 and 12 bring new challenges and opportunities. Students are supported academically and personally as they navigate the demands of VCE, with every aspect of our senior secondary program designed to help them build confidence, perform at their best and prepare for life after school.

An Earlier Advantage

At Islamic College of Melbourne, students commence VCE Units 1 and 2 in Year 10, providing an earlier introduction to senior secondary study. This additional preparation helps students develop confidence, strengthen their study habits and transition into Years 11 and 12 with a strong foundation.

Purpose-Built for Senior Secondary

Years 11 and 12 students learn in a focused senior secondary environment supported by experienced VCE teachers, dedicated study spaces and personalised academic guidance. Smaller learning environments help students remain engaged, independent and well prepared throughout their VCE journey.

Proven Academic Success

Our VCE program has consistently delivered strong academic outcomes, including a 100% completion rate and recognition among Victoria's top-performing secondary schools. Students are supported to achieve their personal best and pursue pathways into university, further study and future careers.

Year 11 & 12 Student Services

Throughout Years 11 and 12, the Student Services team works closely with students, families and teachers to support students through the demands of senior secondary study.

With a strong focus on wellbeing and social-emotional learning (SEL), alongside pastoral care and careers guidance, students are equipped with the motivation, discipline, and practical skills to succeed at school and beyond.

The Senior Secondary Experience

Years 11 and 12 extend well beyond classroom learning. Students benefit from dedicated senior study spaces, leadership opportunities, careers programs and memorable Year 12 experiences that strengthen their confidence and independence. With greater responsibility comes continued guidance, ensuring students remain supported academically, personally and spiritually throughout their final years at the College.

Year 11 & 12 Overview & Curriculum

Throughout Years 11 and 12, students undertake a balanced VCE program that combines core studies with subjects aligned to their interests, strengths and future aspirations. Islamic College of Melbourne offers 15 VCE subjects across English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities, Languages, the Arts and Islamic Studies, giving students the flexibility to tailor their studies to their academic goals and future pathways. Guided by experienced teachers and supported through the subject selection process, every program is carefully planned to meet VCE requirements while preparing students for university, further study and future careers.

English

English develops the advanced reading, writing and communication skills required for success in VCE and beyond. Students analyse a range of texts, strengthen their critical thinking and learn to communicate clearly across a variety of written and spoken forms.

Mathematics

Students select the Mathematics pathway best suited to their abilities and future goals. General Mathematics, Foundation Mathematics and Mathematical Methods provide different levels of challenge while building strong analytical, problem-solving and quantitative reasoning skills.

Science

Science subjects encourage students to investigate the natural world through theory, practical investigations and scientific inquiry. Students can study Biology, Chemistry or Physics, developing the knowledge and skills required for university study and STEM-related careers.

Humanities

Humanities subjects explore the people, systems and ideas that shape society. Students may choose from Business Management, Economics and Legal Studies, developing critical thinking, research and analytical skills while gaining a deeper understanding of contemporary issues.

Languages

Arabic enables students to strengthen their reading, writing, listening and speaking skills while deepening their understanding of language, culture and identity. The subject supports students who wish to continue developing Arabic as part of their VCE program.

Arts & Design

Visual Communication Design develops creativity alongside practical design skills. Students learn to communicate ideas through drawing, digital media and design processes while exploring visual communication in real-world contexts.

Islamic Studies

Texts and Traditions allows students to study significant Islamic texts in greater depth, exploring their historical context, interpretation and contemporary relevance. The subject encourages thoughtful analysis while strengthening students’ understanding of Islamic scholarship and tradition. (Available to ILEAD students.)

Careers Counselling

Students prepare for life beyond school through structured careers education and personalised pathway planning. Guidance is provided for university and TAFE applications, apprenticeships, employment pathways and VTAC, helping students make informed decisions about their future. Students also participate in the annual ICOM Careers Expo, where they can engage with universities, training providers and industry representatives while exploring a wide range of tertiary and career opportunities.
